A victim of Hurricane Wilma, Helene’s condo was flooded and the daycare where she worked was shut down. Helene was forced to rent a new apartment and find a new job. With decreased income, she had to pay for both her mortgage and rent, yet FEMA granted her only $810. After attending a disaster training seminar hosted by Legal Services of the Florida Keys, Helene learned she could fight back. With help from an LSFK attorney, she was granted $12,790. Fifteen months after the hurricane, Helene moved back into her home.
