Martha, a 54 year-old former nurse's assistant, filed her income tax return using a tax preparer. She received a large refund because, unknown to her, the tax preparer made false claims for credits to which she was not entitled. When she was audited, Martha was assessed with a tax debt plus interest and penalties of almost $4,000. Martha came to LSGMI for help when the IRS tried to garnish her wages to pay the debt. This was not a viable option for Martha, who earns less than $1,000 per month, and has three small children and a disabled adult son. LSGMI reduced her debt to only $150.

20,000 runners took over the streets of downtown Miami Thursday evening, April 29, 2010 for the 25th annual Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run. Elite runners joined corporate teams for the first time this year in the third-largest 5k race in the country.

Legal Services of Greater Miami, a nonprofit law firm that helps low-income clients, entered the event for the first time this year. It brought 28 people, all decked in mustard-yellow shirts that read: ``Running for Justice.'' Derek Jackson, a company board member, posted the fastest time in 26 minutes 31 seconds.

But it wasn't about times. ``It's about team building and camaraderie,'' attorney Lissette Labrousse said. ``We all had so much fun.''
