Thanks to Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc.'s dedication and strong advocacy, justice was obtained for a victim of egregious discrimination. LSGMI addressed the injustice, and also obtained relief which will allow the victim to refocus her life. This is an example of how LSGMI seeks respect and justice for our clients every day.
In this case, a woman was subjected to discrimination and a hostile environment in her workplace who after being diagnosed with HIV. Feeling that she could no longer handle the workplace harassment, she quit her job and sought legal assistance. With no income and no money to pay an attorney, she came to LSGMI for help. After investigating her claims, LSGMI accepted her case.
Assisted by private attorney Robert Weisberg, LSGMI attorney Jocelyn Jauregui filed a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Soon thereafter, the EEOC reviewed the charge and asked the parties to participate in mediation. After extensive advocacy and negotiation by her attorneys, the client's dispute was favorably resolved prior to filing a lawsuit. As a result of her attorneys' hard work, the client recovered over $100,000 for both back-pay and compensatory damages.
This is another example of the high quality work that LSGMI performs every day on behalf of HIV positive clients, including those subjected to discrimination in the workplace.
