Florida is home to 1.8 million veterans, 11 active military bases and a host of other military installations. The Military Legal Advocacy Project was created in response to a multitude of unmet legal needs arising among veterans, active duty military and their families as a direct result of their deployment. The Project provides free legal assistance to low income veterans, active duty military and their families, and resolves civil legal problems that are barriers to income and housing.
The Project:
• Helps low income veterans and their families avoid becoming homeless by resolving legal problems which make it difficult to get or keep permanent stable housing. Examples of cases handled by the Project include eviction defense, enforcement of laws that require landlords to provide safe and habitable housing, mortgage foreclosure defense, child support modifications for non custodial parents, access to health care and other benefits, IRS tax disputes, and consumer and employment problems that negatively affect income and credit.
• Represents low income veterans before the discharge review boards of various military branches to obtain upgrades to their discharge status. This allows the veterans to access veteran benefits and improves their prospects for employment.
• Provides representation in VA character of service adjudications to bring those who served in the military within the VA definition of a “veteran.” This helps low income veterans receive the Department of Veteran Affairs benefits to which they are entitled.
